La Bastide du Roy: four centuries of weddings and love stories on the French Riviera

There are places that host weddings.

And then there are those that carry their imprint, century after century.

La Bastide du Roy undeniably belongs to the latter.

A wedding venue on the French Riviera where history is not simply a backdrop… but the very foundation.

1608: A Royal Wedding Gift from Henry IV of France

It all began in the early 17th century.

In 1604, Henry IV of France acquired the Château Grimaldi and its surrounding lands.

A few years later, in 1608, La Bastide du Roy took on a powerful symbolic dimension: it was offered as a wedding gift upon the king’s second marriage to Marie de' Medici.

A rare gesture — almost as political as it was romantic: offering a place, a land, a lasting presence to seal a union.

From that moment on, the Bastide became more than an estate; it became a witness to a royal marriage.

1927: Jeanne Lanvin and the Second Great Wedding Gesture

Centuries pass. The estate changes hands, moves through eras, families, and purposes.

Then comes 1927.

The Brechneff family sell La Bastide du Roy to Jeanne Lanvin, one of the great figures of French couture.

But she does not acquire it for herself.

Instead, she offers it as a wedding gift to her only daughter, Marie-Blanche de Polignac, on the occasion of her marriage to Count Jean de Polignac, cousin of the princely family of Monaco.

Once again, the very same gesture travels through time: offering a place to celebrate a union.

Two eras. Two marriages.

And across the centuries, the same intention remains — to offer love a place worthy of it, a place capable of carrying it through time.

Today, La Bastide du Roy continues to write love stories in the heart of the French Riviera.

And this is where the story becomes almost striking in its coherence.

Today, the Bastide du Roy is an event venue dedicated to weddings — but not just any weddings:

  • Ceremonies beneath centuries-old olive trees.

  • Dinners set within gardens designed for contemplation.

Unions celebrated in a place that was itself once offered… as a wedding gift.

As though the circle had never truly been broken.

And today, every couple who chooses the Bastide to say “I do.”

To marry at La Bastide du Roy is to become part of a continuity.

Getting married here is not simply choosing a setting on the French Riviera — it is stepping into a legacy.

A legacy of wedding gifts, of transmission, of gestures of love transformed into places.

The Bastide du Roy does not merely host a wedding; it anchors it within a story far greater than itself.

And perhaps that is where its true singularity lies.

A wedding venue… and a place to discover in another way

Two great wedding gifts shaped its history.

And even today, season after season, new celebrations continue this tradition.

The Bastide du Roy did not wait to become an event venue to speak about love — it has always done so, and now, it does so with you.

While La Bastide du Roy is now renowned for its exceptional weddings on the French Riviera, it can also be discovered from another perspective.

Once a month, the Bastide opens its doors through guided tours, inviting visitors to explore its history, heritage, and remarkable gardens, imagined as true living works of art.

Because here, love wrote the story… and passion continues to bring it to life.
